Landscape Designer: Zach Fuchs
Landscape Installation Foreman: Alex Markowski
We provided landscaping enhancements for this Neptune Beach homeowner, including replacing three large palms, improving raised beds, planting along the fence, and drainage. Landscape Designer Zach Fuchs met with the homeowners and developed a landscape design that met their wants and desires. While these clients are avid gardeners, much of what they wanted to be accomplished was beyond their abilities and would require heavy equipment and some hard work under Florida’s hot July sun.
Front Yard
Landscape Foreman Alex Markowski led the landscape design installation process. Two large declining Queen Palms were removed in the front yard and replaced with two six-foot clear-trunk Phoenix sylvestris. These large specimens were secured by wooden staking kits that will keep the palms growing straight and protect them from high wind events common in hurricane season. Rockaway’s policies and procedures include the removal of the stakes after one year of installation. There was likewise a Pygmy Date Palm, Phoenix roebelenii, in declining health by the front door, which was replaced with a young, healthy triple trunk specimen. Red fountain grass was planted along the stretch of the privacy fence in the front yard for added curb appeal, which will enhance the aesthetics at night with the clients’ landscape lighting.
Back Yard
The clients’ backyard landscaping is a tropical oasis with a pool, pergola, outdoor kitchen, and raised flower beds. Improvements to the raised beds were required to keep the homeowner’s plants in optimum health. While one raised bed was freshened by weeding and new mulch installation, the other raised bed needed more work. The second raised bed had a drainage and erosion problem with poor soil that included some building materials. Some soil, broken bricks, and other material were removed and replaced with soil to help new plantings flourish. The backside of the raised bed along the privacy fence was reinforced with wood to prevent erosion. Drain holes were drilled along the length of the raised bed pavers to allow for improved drainage. In keeping with the homeowner’s existing tropical theme, the new plantings included Arbicola, crotons, liriope, and pentas. They were spaced within the raised bed to provide lasting, aesthetically pleasing layers of color throughout their growth cycle.
Irrigation and Drainage
Irrigation enhancements were provided following our findings from the Irrigation Inspection. Irrigation systems are invaluable in protecting the health of new and existing landscapes. Proper drainage is likewise essential for protecting your home and landscape. Downspout adapters were installed and piped to a drain box away from the house to protect the home and landscape from damage.
