Chrysanthemums are a great way to add fall and even winter color to your landscape or home. They look striking on an entry or porch, providing a friendly welcome during the fall holidays. Chrysanthemums can be kept in containers or planted into the ground for a colorful mass effect. They also last well as cut flowers.

You only need to follow a few simple guidelines to ensure a long lasting color display. Continued bud production is best with 6 hours of full sun but while we still have a reasonable amount of afternoon heat, provide some shade during that time. Chrysanthemums need fertile, well-draining soil, so if you repot them or plant them in the ground, you can add some organic matter. You can water often as long as the soil drains well and the roots don’t remain wet. Probably most importantly, water your Mum around the base of the plant and not from overhead. Avoid getting water on the flowers to extend the life of the blooms. Finally, removing spent blooms will promote future flowering.
